## How to get ISO 17100:2015 Certified in the U.S.A.

### Language Service Provider (LSP), Translation Service Provider (TSP), Translation Agency owners and Partners often ask, “How do we become ISO 17100 Certified”?

## First, What is the ISO 17100:2015 standard?

![](https://usatranslatorsassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/Iso_300.png)

### Quick Answer: the ISO 17100 is an International (European flair) standard for translation agencies, LSPs and TSPs to follow so they can all use similar approved professional procedures to guarantee a certain level of quality by all entities certified to such standards.

#### Basically, a bunch of professionals in Europe, who are almost all multilingual since school age, that is to say, a special group who are really into languages, got together in technical committees, all under the ISO umbrella organization, and decided what professional agencies should all do at a minimum to guarantee a certain level of international quality and commonality so translations, and the translation process overall, go smoother than in past centuries. If adhered to, final translations should also be of much higher quality.

## There are 3 main permeating lines of thought in the ISO 17100 spec:

### First, Common Terminology LSPs and TSPs can use, so when talking with providers, all will understand what is meant by commonly used industry terms;

### Second, Roles within a TSP and Translator Qualifications; Translators, Reviewers, Proofreaders, Project Managers. This is such an important point, a later amendment addresses professional translator qualifications in specific terms

### Third, Processes of a Translation; Translation Work Flow Diagram and Best Practices; Project management stages.
